Drive from London to Wales
A straight journey from London to Wales along the M4 could take as little as 2 hours. However, a drive from London and through the south of England to Wales along the A roads can take you through the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside as well as some historic and interesting cities. The journey from London to Cardiff, capital city of Wales, is around 175 miles.
Leaving London on the A40 and moving onto the A413 you will be heading towards Amersham. This historic town is a picturesque place with much of its 17th and 18th century buildings still in tact. Its main feature is its old coaching inns and its cobbled streets make a great place to stroll and take in the timbered buildings. Leaving Amersham, head along the A4010 to Princes Risborough, 8 miles from Aylesbury, which is a lovely town in Buckinghamshire and featured often in films. Here you can visit the chalk hill carvings on the route of the pre-Roman Upper Icknield Way and the 13th century St. Mary`s church.
Moving on to the A4129 and into Thame, also in Buckinghamshire, you can enjoy walking or cycling along the Ridgeway Path, taking in the outstanding views of the Chiltern Hills. Look skyward to spot a red kite, once an endangered species and now in abundance after being reintroduced in the area.
Continue along the A418, merging onto the A40 and head for Burford, whichis a picturesque 15th century town, situated in Oxfordshire and known as the gateway to the Cotswolds. This town is 20 miles north of Oxford. The high street here slopes down towards the wolds, with views into the Windrush Valley where you will find a 3 arched medieval bridge which crosses the river. Here you can appreciate the lovely landscape. The high street is a beautiful example of quaint story book cottages dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.
Continue driving along the A417 towards Gloucester and merge onto the A40. Take a detour into the lovely Regency spa town of Cheltenham, with its Regency houses characterised by ironwork balconies and painted stucco facades along the Promenade. Here in Cheltenham you can enjoy a day at the race course, or enjoy some retail therapy in its vast selection of shops. If you decide to stay overnight in Cheltenham, you can enjoy walking the Romantic Road for a few hours, taking in the magnificent sites along the way, including SudeleyCastle at Winchcombe with its award winning gardens and the remains of the 13th century Hailes Abbey, Prinkmarsh Abbey, the home of Benedictine monks and Painswick Rococo Gardens. Visit nearby Gloucester, a city with unique history from Roman foundations to the Victorian docklands. Gloucester Cathedral is a stunningly beautiful building, with Norman, Romanesque and Perpendicular architecture. The historic Gloucester Docks are newly renovated and house several interesting museums.
Head back to the A40 and on to Monmouth, enjoying the stunning Welsh countryside along the way. Stop off in Monmouth, a lovely border town which attracts many visitors each year. This was the birthplace of Henry V and is home to a 13th century bridge which is the last one of its kind to still stand in the UK. Monmouth Castle houses the Regimental museum, opened in 1989. Visit Raglan Castle, the finest medieval fortress castle in Britain and set in the countryside of the Vale of Usk.
Continue along the A40, travelling through Newport and on to the B4237 towards Cardiff. This great city offers much in the way of attractions. Here you can visit the Millennium Stadium, a 74,000 seater arena which hosts concerts and major sporting events.
